Michigan employers are increasingly incorporating artificial intelligence into human resources work, but formal training and workplace safeguards have not kept pace, according to a new survey from the Troy-based American Society of Employers.

The organization's AI in HR Pulse Survey, released Wednesday, Oct. 21, found that 78% of 109 responding Michigan employers either use AI in HR or expect to introduce it within the next year. A comparable ASE survey in 2024 put that figure at 24%.

The findings point to a gap between adoption and oversight. Only 15% of respondents said their organizations require formal AI training, while 34% reported providing none.

Privacy and security were the most frequently identified concerns, cited by 72% of respondents. Meanwhile, 53% said their organizations have a written policy governing employee use of AI.

ASE also found that AI is being used for tasks such as preparing HR materials and recruiting. Nearly two-thirds of respondents reported saving time through the technology.

The survey reflects responses from participating employers rather than every business in Michigan. ASE's earlier survey included 180 organizations, compared with 109 this year.
