A Troy-based company founded by a former Navy SEAL is accepting referrals to provide nonmedical home care for veterans across metro Detroit.

VETTED, led by founder and president Evan Shelline, announced in September that it was accepting Department of Veterans Affairs community care referrals in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties.

The company helps veterans with everyday activities so they can continue living at home, according to its Sept. 24 announcement.

What the service provides

VETTED offers nonmedical assistance with personal care, meal preparation and other daily tasks. Its services also include respite care intended to give family caregivers a break.

The company's caregivers are not nurses. The VA's Homemaker and Home Health Aide program provides assistance with activities such as bathing, dressing, eating and personal grooming.

Care depends on each veteran's assessed needs and the services authorized by the VA.

How veterans can seek care

Veterans and families can ask a VA social worker about home-care eligibility and available community providers.

According to the VA's community care guidance, a veteran generally needs a referral and approval from a VA care team before receiving covered services from a community provider.

The VA determines eligibility and the scope of authorized care. Copayments may apply depending on a veteran's circumstances.

VETTED says veterans and families can ask their VA social worker about the company by name.

Veteran-owned business in Troy

Shelline served about a decade in the Navy, including approximately six years with the SEAL Teams, according to the company's leadership biography.

He leads VETTED with co-owner Chris Warburton, whose background includes more than 15 years in health care operations.

The company is a service-disabled veteran-owned small business. It also pursues federal contracting opportunities, although its contracting page reports no federal awards to date.

VETTED operates from 2125 Butterfield Drive, Suite 299, in Troy.

Veterans, families and VA social workers can contact the company at 248-794-9292 or visit its care information page.
