The Troy-based nonprofit The Bottomless Toy Chest is seeking volunteers and donations as it prepares for its annual December Tons of Toys program for children receiving hospital treatment.

The organization distributes more than 37,000 new toys annually to pediatric patients at 34 hospitals in 16 states, according to a Troy City Lifestyle profile. Its hospital partners include Children's Hospital of Michigan-Troy and Corewell Health Children's at Beaumont Troy.

The nonprofit grew from founder Mickey Guisewite's experience caring for her son Jack during his treatment for leukemia. Guisewite launched a pilot toy program at Children's Hospital of Michigan in 2008.

The organization's Get Involved page invites residents, businesses, schools, churches and other community groups to organize toy drives, fundraisers and volunteer wrapping events.

Every donated toy is wrapped in clear cellophane and tied with ribbon before delivery. The nonprofit supplies wrapping materials and toys for groups interested in holding wrapping parties, either at its facility or at another location.

The organization accepts new toys and activities for patients from infancy through age 22. Its website specifies that donated items must be new and have their original tags.

Suggested donations include Lego sets, craft kits, remote-control vehicles, sports items, comfort items for teenagers and gift cards.

The nonprofit's Tons of Toys holiday program sends volunteers into hospital oncology clinics to distribute gifts to patients and their siblings.

During a previous holiday season, the organization also shipped 100 boxes of holiday items to additional hospital partners, according to its website.

The nonprofit expanded its hospital partnerships this year. In February 2026, it added Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids and Prisma Health Children's Hospital – Upstate in Greenville, South Carolina, according to its March announcement.

Residents can learn about donating toys, hosting a fundraiser or organizing a wrapping event through the nonprofit's website. Financial donations are also accepted.
