Troy-area students in grades 6 through 12 can apply to help shape artificial intelligence instruction across Oakland County schools.

Oakland Schools, the county’s intermediate school district, is forming a Student AI Advisory Council. Students must complete an online interest form by Monday, Nov. 2, according to an Oakland Schools announcement published by the Oakland County Times.

The council will discuss AI’s opportunities and challenges and help guide instruction countywide. No prior AI experience is required. Organizers welcome students who use AI regularly, those with little experience and those concerned about the technology.

The council will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on four Mondays:

  • Nov. 16, 2026
  • Jan. 25, 2027, virtually
  • March 1, 2027
  • April 26, 2027

In-person meetings will take place at Oakland Schools’ main campus, 2111 Pontiac Lake Road in Waterford. Students should be prepared to attend all four sessions.

The initiative comes as AI becomes a common schoolwork tool. A nationally representative Common Sense Media survey of more than 1,000 U.S. teens, released in August, found that 70% reported using AI for schoolwork.

Oakland Schools’ AI Strategy and Innovation team also provides districts with professional learning, policy guidance and implementation support, emphasizing privacy, responsible use and equitable access.

Families and educators with questions can contact Justin Bruno, Oakland Schools’ director of AI strategy and innovation, at [email protected].
