Troy’s new Smith Middle School is a centerpiece of the district’s $555 million bond program, with its grand opening listed on the district calendar for Monday, Oct. 12.

The district calendar scheduled the event from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the school.

The new building replaces the old Smith Middle School. Construction began in spring 2024, with a fall 2026 opening planned, according to the district’s Smith project page.

The approximately 120,000-square-foot school includes flexible classrooms, common areas for collaboration, a STEM lab, a media center, visual and performing arts spaces, a dining commons and a three-court gym.

Voters approved the district’s $555 million bond on Nov. 8, 2022. It is being issued in three series over multiple years. At the time of the proposal, the district estimated a 2-mill increase over the existing bond millage rate, costing the average homeowner less than $1 per day, according to its bond status page.

The old Smith building also plays a role in the next phase of bond work. The district’s Boulan Park renovation plan calls for students and staff to move temporarily to the former Smith building while Boulan Park is renovated.

Larson Middle School students and staff will use the former Smith building after Boulan Park’s renovation is complete and its students return to their campus.

The bond program also includes athletic facility upgrades at Troy High School and Athens High School, furniture replacements and elementary playground improvements. The district says playgrounds were renovated during the summers of 2024 and 2025, with approximately $700,000 budgeted for each playground.

At Athens High School, the district now anticipates breaking ground on a new addition in early spring 2027, with completion expected in summer 2029.
