Lily Hospice in Troy has named former Navy SEAL Evan Shelline chair of a new committee advising the hospice on end-of-life care for military veterans.

The Veteran Advisory Committee held its first meeting Oct. 7, according to CityBiz. The group will advise Lily Hospice on improving care and support services for veterans and their families across Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties.

“It’s so important to honor and celebrate these veterans while they are still with us and not wait until after they’re gone,” Shelline said in a statement.

Shelline served about 10 years in the U.S. Navy, including six years with the SEAL Teams. He is the founder and president of VETTED, a service-disabled veteran-owned business he started in 2024. The Troy-based company provides in-home care for veterans across the tri-county area.

He also serves as senior vice commander of Sgt. Stanley F. Romanowski VFW Post 6896 and founded The Veteran Muster, a gathering for military veterans organized in senior living communities across Southeast Michigan.

Simone Luu, a registered nurse and former Navy hospital corpsman, serves as the committee’s co-chair and clinical leader. Luu leads Lily Hospice’s Veteran Rapid Response program, which the organization says aims to help veteran families receive assistance quickly.

The committee includes veterans who served in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. It is scheduled to meet every other month.

According to Lily Hospice’s website, the committee will review how the hospice identifies veterans during initial patient assessments, advise its rapid response team and coordinate outreach with local veterans’ organizations.

Members will also help develop recognition initiatives such as pinning ceremonies and review educational materials about military-related end-of-life and survivor benefits.

The group plans to strengthen ties with Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts, county veterans service offices and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Lily Hospice said it will offer free educational presentations on hospice services and veterans’ benefits to those organizations.

Lily Hospice announced in October that it had been recognized as a We Honor Veterans Bronze Level partner. The national program, operated by the National Alliance for Care at Home, provides education and resources to help care providers address veterans’ needs.
