Troy residents can drop off unused or expired prescription medications at the Troy Police Department on Saturday, Oct. 24, no questions asked.
The department at 500 W. Big Beaver Road will serve as a collection site for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s 31st National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and drop-offs are anonymous.
The Troy Police Department’s announcement on X specifies dry items only: pills, capsules and tablets. Residents should remove medications from bottles and blister packs and place them in zip-locking plastic bags.
Liquids, gels, ointments, needles and other sharps will not be accepted at the Troy location, according to the department’s flyer.
Troy’s restrictions differ from the national program’s broader guidelines. The DEA’s press release lists tablets, capsules, patches and liquid medications securely sealed in their original containers among accepted items nationally. Syringes, sharps and illicit drugs are excluded.
Residents using the Troy site should follow the department’s dry-items-only instructions.
The DEA announced more than 4,400 collection sites nationwide for the Oct. 24 event, working with more than 4,300 law enforcement partners.
The April 2026 Take Back Day collected 642,410 pounds of medication, according to a DEA bulletin. That brought the program’s cumulative collection to more than 21 million pounds since 2010.
The agency says removing unneeded medications from homes reduces the risk of misuse and accidental ingestion.
Residents who cannot attend Oct. 24 can find ongoing disposal options through the DEA’s year-round collection locator. The agency says more than 15,300 pharmacies, hospitals and businesses offer medication disposal throughout the year.
