Troy Mayor Ethan Baker lost his bid for Congress on Tuesday, Nov. 3, falling to Democrat Jeremy Moss in Michigan's 11th Congressional District.

Moss, a state senator from Bloomfield Township, received approximately 61% of the vote, compared with Baker's 37%, according to WDIV's unofficial election results. All precincts were reporting, but results remain unofficial until certification.

Baker, the Republican candidate, ran on a platform emphasizing bipartisanship and reducing political division.

Troy's sitting mayor was on the ballot, and the city's residents will have a new representative in Washington when Moss takes office in January.

Moss succeeds Haley Stevens

Moss will succeed U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens, a Birmingham Democrat who did not seek reelection to the House seat.

Stevens instead ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic U.S. Senate nomination.

Moss will become Michigan's first openly LGBTQ+ member of Congress, as Michigan Advance reported.

In a statement following his victory, Moss identified lowering costs, protecting health care and holding the Trump administration accountable as priorities for his time in Congress.

Moss currently serves as president pro tempore of the Michigan Senate, according to the Senate's official leadership directory.

Before entering the Legislature, he was elected to the Southfield City Council in 2011, becoming its youngest-ever elected member.

He later served in the Michigan House of Representatives before winning election to the state Senate.

Baker's record in Troy

Baker has served as Troy's mayor since 2019 and won reelection in 2023, according to the City of Troy's official biography.

He previously served on the Troy City Council from 2015 to 2019.

Baker also served as vice chair of the Troy Downtown Development Authority and chair of the Global Troy Advisory Committee.

His congressional campaign emphasized cooperation across party lines and addressing issues including the cost of living, jobs, health care and infrastructure.

Baker's congressional defeat does not end his current term as Troy mayor. The city's council records list his term as expiring in November 2027.

A new representative for Oakland County

Michigan's 11th Congressional District includes Troy and several other Oakland County communities, including Royal Oak, Pontiac, Auburn Hills and West Bloomfield Township.

Moss's victory keeps the congressional seat in Democratic hands following Stevens' departure.

The election results will become official following the canvassing and certification process.
